All of Christ, For All of Life

We tend to slice our lives into neat compartments. We act one way at work, handle money a certain way, then flip the switch when we get home and live an entirely different life. But as Christians, compartmentalization isn’t biblical, not in any sphere.

The Christian life is a total transformation from beginning to end.

The reality is Jesus did not just save your soul for heaven, He claims every square inch of your Monday morning, too.

No Neutral Zones

“All of Christ for all of life” means there is no neutral zone in the Christian’s existence. If you confess Jesus as Savior and Lord, you must grasp what “Lord” truly means: He is Lord over all. All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Him (Matthew 28:18).

There is no sacred or secular divide. Christ is not Lord only of your quiet time, morning prayers, or evening devotions. No, He is Lord of your work, your family, politics, screen time, and even that meatloaf recipe you are planning for tonight.

The Biblical Foundation

Scripture leaves no room for half-measures:

  • Colossians 1:15–20 declares Christ is preeminent over all creation and “all things have been created through Him and for Him.” He created it, holds it together, and it exists for Him. He owns it all.

  • 1 Corinthians 10:31 commands, “Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” “All” means all. There are no exceptions.

  • 2 Corinthians 10:5 calls us to “take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.” Every single one.

We often read these verses, nod approvingly (“That’s a nice way to live”), set the Bible down, and move on. We treat Scripture like pithy motivational quotes instead of the authoritative Word of God that it is.

So when God says “do all,” He means all — whether you are reading fiction, sitting at your desk, mowing the lawn, or parenting your kids.

Laziness and mediocrity have no place in the life of the Christian. Christ has entrusted us with good gifts, and we are called to steward them faithfully and excellently.

Historical Echo: Kuyper’s Challenge

A few years ago, a friend handed me Abraham Kuyper’s writings on sphere sovereignty. In his famous declaration at the inauguration of the Free University of Amsterdam, Kuyper said:

There is not a square inch in the whole domain of our human existence over which Christ, who is Sovereign over all, does not cry, “Mine!”

That is the heartbeat of “All of Christ, for All of Life.” Everything belongs to Christ. We are merely stewards of what He has given us.

Why This Matters Today

The danger is real. Compartmentalized Christianity turns faith into something private and irrelevant. Some think that keeping Jesus “close” to our hearts is Christian enough. That could not be further from the truth.

This idea of “neutral zones” in life is a myth. A lie. When we buy into it, we live anti-Christian lives — even if we go to church every Sunday.

Bringing Every Sphere Under Christ

Christ claims every inch. So consider these areas:

  • Vocation and daily work: Are you working as unto the Lord?

  • Family and parenting: Is your home a place where Christ reigns?

  • Politics and the public square: Do your convictions reflect Christ’s lordship?

  • Education and the mind: Are your thoughts captive to Him?

  • Culture, arts, and leisure: Does your rest and entertainment glorify God?

  • Finances: Does God’s Word govern your finances?

There are many more areas we could mention, but the question remains: Are you in full submission to Christ in all areas of your life?

The Joyful (and Hard) Reality

This is not easy. Dualism is our default setting in a fallen world, and surrendering every sphere takes daily battle. But it is the most joyous way to live. Christianity is not drudgery — it is beautiful freedom in full submission to Christ.

As the Westminster Shorter Catechism puts it in its very first answer: “Man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever.”

Christ is worthy of it all. So let us stop compartmentalizing and start living like everything really is His, because it is.

All of Christ, for All of Life.

Noah A. Hinton

Noah A. Hinton pastored his first church at the age of 22 in northern Idaho. During that time, he came to the sobering realization that he had been going through the motions of ministry without true salvation. At age 23, while still serving as a pastor, the Lord graciously saved his soul. This is a powerful testimony underscoring that not all who occupy the pastoral office are necessarily regenerate or truly converted.

It was during this transformative period that Noah’s deep interest in faithfully explaining the text of God’s Word, learning how to think Christianly, and forming a Biblical worldview began to take root.

While there, he developed a dear friendship with Tim Butler, founder, editor, and main contributor of 4TheCross, a bond that continues to this day.

Noah, his wife Miriah, and their son currently reside outside of Knoxville, Tennessee, where they are covenant members of Basswood Church.
